  • Leona Helget, age 96, of Springfield, died on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield Chapel and will continue on Wednesday from 10 until 11 a.m. at the St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield. There will be Parish Prayer Service on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield. There will be a CCW Rosary on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield. Service will be held at the St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Springfield, on Wednesday at 11 a.m. The clergy will be Father Phil Schotzko. Interment will be at the St. Raphael's Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield. On line condolences may be left for the family at www.sturmfh.com.
    Leona Angela Helget was born June 21, 1917 to George Sr. and Helena (Wurtzberger) Rothmeier in Sleepy Eye. On June 1, 1938, Leona was united in marriage to Florian Helget at St. Mary’s Catholic in Sleepy Eye. Leona and Florian lived on various farms in Brown County until moving into Springfield in 1959. Leona worked for Woehrman’s Restaurant as a cook and later for Wurmstein Bakery and Budenski Bakery. She loved to play Scrabble, even by herself when no one was around to play. Her family enjoyed her baking and cooking especially chicken, chicken dressing, liverwurst, sauerkraut and dumplings, white gravy, German potato salad, and egg coffee for various church events. Leona’s family was very special to her and she treasured time with them. She made many rosaries for missions and quilts for her family. Leona was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church where she was a member of the CCW.
    She is survived by her children, Kenneth (Sally) Helget of Springfield, Lois Schley of Kent, Wash., Betty Kieper of Springfield, Joanne Groebner of Sleepy Eye, Marge (Randi) Martinson of Fairmont, Kevin (Sue) Helget of Franklin; 25 grandchildren; 51 great grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; many cousins, nieces and nephews.
    Leona was preceded in death by her parents; husband Florian; infant daughter; sons-in-law, Jerry Kieper and Ralph Schley; grandson, Paul; great granddaughter, Abby Windschitl; her 9 siblings.
