  • On Friday, April 25 from 2:15-3 p.m., Sleepy Eye Public School eighth grade students will hold a Career Discovery Fair in the SEPS cafeteria.

Parents, local professionals and interested community members are invited to attend. This middle school career exploration unit was built based around new legislation urging teachers and administrators to encourage college and career readiness at younger ages. Eighth grade students have been working very hard for the past five weeks to research, write, communicate and interview in order to gain insight into careers they might be interested in down the road.

Students began this project by completing an interest inventory built by Minnesota Career Information Systems (MCIS). They were then directed to choose a specific career path for their future, finding a series of resources to incorporate into an essay.

Once students had chosen individual careers, professionals from Sleepy Eye and surrounding communities were invited into the school. Students were responsible for creating interview questions and holding small-group discussions with the professionals to get a taste of what the career is like in the real world.

Students were encouraged to use information provided by local professionals in their essays and display boards.
This project has allowed students to gain knowledge of their own interests and strengths while learning how important education, communication skills, creativity and effort are for future careers.
