  • It was an easy season opener for the St. Mary’s baseball team on April 15.

The Knights traveled to Buffalo Lake-Hector Stewart where they demolished the Mustangs 12-0 after seven innings. Junior David Surprenant was the winning pitcher after throwing 12 strikeouts and just two walks and no hits. Mike Zinniel took over for Surprenant after six innings and allowed the two hits. Meanwhile, St. Mary’s offense mustered up four runs in the first three innings, but was all but over in the seventh after scoring eight more in a hitting frenzy.

Senior Mike Hirsch went 2-for-4 at bat, scoring two runs and hitting one RBI to lead the Knights. Junior Brandon Helget went 2-for-5, scored one run and hit one double. Meanwhile, Jon Kopacek, Jared Beltz, and John Brandl each scored two runs in the victory.

St. Mary’s Coach Bruce Woitas said he was pleased with the season opener.

“Was nice to get a game played and thought we did a nice job overall,” Woitas said.
