  • St. Mary’s softball team pounded Wabasso on April 8 in Sleepy Eye.
    Junior Laura Pelzel pitched all five innings for St. Mary’s, and threw four strikeouts to lead on defense. Meanwhile, the Knights excelled offensively, scoring at least two runs every inning. Senior Emily Schumacher went 3-for-3 at bat, and had three runs and three RBI to lead St. Mary’s. Behind her was senior Larissa Helget, who went 2-3 at bat and also scored three runs. Both Schumacher and Helget hit a triple in the game.
    “The girls overall payed well for the first game,” Coach Wendy Owens said. “Offensively bats were going, ran bases well and defensively Laura did well too.”
    Other top performers include senior Deonna Brinkman, who had one hit, two runs scored, and two walks. Meanwhile, junior Cassie Smith went 1-for-2, with two runs scored and one RBI. Senior Karissa Fleck also had one RBI.
    On April 15, the Lady Knights hosted BLHS where they won 10-0 in five innings. Helget was first to put a run on the board after hitting a big home run over the right field fence in the first inning. Meanwhile, Pelzel was the winning pitcher after allowing no runs and just one hit over the five innings. She also threw five strikeouts to lead the defense. Both Helget and Brinkman went 3-for-3 at bat in the victory.
