The Sleepy Eye Public softball team kicked off the season with a 20-0 victory on April 7 at Kiefer Park.

It was a warm but breezy opener for the Indians, who took a 9-0 lead in the first inning. Senior Sammy Villanueva scored the first run for Sleepy Eye, who had two singles on the day. The Indians showed tough pitching on defense, led by senior Carly Jensen who threw three strikeouts over three innings.

Meanwhile, the Rockets were struggling at bat and failed to catch some key hits from Sleepy Eye to the outfield. The game was quickly over after the fourth inning, in which the Indians had another dominant hitting streak which led to the five inning game.

“I was really excited. I thought the girls played good all the way around,” Sleepy Eye Coach Tim Hoffmann said. “No errors, great pitching, good job behind the plate. We hit the ball really well. These girls know we want to keep it going now so we’re glad to get the first one under our belt.”

Senior Jamie Fischer led the Indians with four hits while senior Jordyn Domeier added two hits, three RBI and a triple in the fourth inning.
