  • It’s a question many golf enthusiasts ask themselves every year: “When is the golf course going to open?” The answer? Soon.

Sleepy Eye Golf Club Manager Brian Hertling said the course could be open as early as mid April.

    “I’m real optimistic,” Hertling said.

Last year at this time, the course still had snow covering most of its holes, which delayed the opening of the course by a few weeks. Recently, Sleepy Eye has seen a mix of warmer weather and some rain which melted most of the snow in a hurry. The depletion of snow has given Hertling, along with the rest of the golf club community, some hope.

“I’m looking forward to seeing people again and getting going with Spring,” Hertling said. “After the winter we’ve had with the cold weather and some of the tragedy in town I think it’s time to turn the page.”

Hertling mentioned this year’s winter season wasn’t as bad as last year’s, as the club lost close to eight weeks of its season due to the early fall and late spring. Even though this year looks to be better, it will still be nearly a month later than the 2012 season, in which the course opened on March 14.

Preparations for the opening have already begun. Hertling said the most of the staff have been hired and are ready to go, and he is looking to upgrade the clubhouse kitchen to feature more menu items and drinks. Hertling said the club recently purchased brand new Yamaha golf carts for golfers to use which will be a nice selling point this year. Hertling hopes to soon have the driving range open for golfers to use before the course opens.
