  • Orville Austin, age 92 of Fairmont, passed away peacefully at his home in Fairmont on Saturday, March 29, 2014. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 4 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Fairmont. Burial with full military honors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and the Martin County V.F.W. Post 1222 will follow at Fairview Memorial Park in Fairmont. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 3, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and will continue one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. www.lakeviewfuneralhome.net.
    Orville Willard Austin was born on April 8, 1921 in Manyaska Township, Martin Co., the son of Adin and Mabel (Plumhoff) Austin. He attended District 11 country school in Rutland Township. In July of 1942, Orville was drafted in the U.S. Army and served overseas during WW II and was wounded in the Colmar Pocket with the 3rd Division in Germany. He came back home on Dec. 23, 1945 and was awarded the Purple Heart Award and the Combat Infantry Badge. On February 23, 1947 he was united in marriage to Virginia Simon at the Fairmont Congregational Church. They farmed together first in Fairmont for 15 years, Jackson County for two years then Rolling Green Township before purchasing a farm in Brown County, near Sleepy Eye where Orville milked cows for many years. In 2002, Orville and Virginia moved off the farm and back to Fairmont. Orville and Virginia were blessed with five children, Prudie, Daniel, Lanny, Tom and Joel. Orville was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Fairmont, life member of the Martin Co. V.F.W. Post 1222. He was also a member of the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 1222 and the Disabled American Veterans. Orville loved fishing and watching sports, playing cards and cribbage. A proud moment for Orville was when he received his high school diploma from Fairmont High School through the Veterans Association.
    Those that will cherish his memory include his wife of 67 years, Virginia Austin of Fairmont; four children, Prudie Murphy of Fairmont, Daniel Austin of Fairmont, Lanny Austin of Columbus, Ohio; and Joel Austin of Jackson; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; eight brothers-in-law; and sisters-in-law; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
    Orville was preceded in death by his parents, Adin and Mabel Austin; a son, Thomas Austin; an infant son; brother, Merle Austin; sister, Velma Wolner; brother-in-law, Joel Wolner; and a sister-in-law, Darlene Austin.
