March is here and with only a couple days left of the “winter” season. The nice warm weather of this past week has certainly made our school hours a little bit more enjoyable. The month of March is always a busy month of the school year so here is a list of the many activities and events at St. John’s.

This week our students started another fundraiser and now will be selling Butter Braids until March 28. The Butter Braids are a delicious treat and community favorite. Order yours soon!

Tomorrow, our Coin Wars fundraiser will sadly come to a close. Students over the past two months have placed money into two barrels: one for the principal to be shaved bald or the other barrel for the principal to receive a pink mohawk. As of today, the pink mohawk barrel has a higher volume of coins. The announcement of the winning barrel will be made on Parent’s Day of our Lutheran Schools Week, Thursday, April 3. Money raised from the Coin Wars fundraiser will go to our new playground planned for the next school year.

This Friday is also our last day of the third quarter and report cards will be handed out on Monday. Grades 1-3 will be attending Charger Youth Day at Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School on Monday, March 17. Our students will play games with other area Lutheran grade school and MVL high school students.

Tuesday, March 25, will be our Preschool and Kindergarten Open House from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Parents who are looking for a Christian education for their little ones are more than welcome to attend. Please enter the glass doors of the school (door #1). Children do not have to be members of the church to enroll.

Our students will be attending the St. Mary’s School musical on Thursday, March 27. We always appreciate the invite from Mrs. Gangelhoff and every year the musical is always well done. All our students enjoy the show!

Grades 5-8 will be traveling to Martin Luther College on Friday, March 28 for Fine Arts Day. Our students spend the entire day attending choir, art and drama workshops. These workshops focus on strengthening the fine art skills of our students.

Monday, March 31 will begin our Lutheran Schools Week and run through Sunday, April 6. Activities planned are pajama day, movie day, food shelf day, swimming at Vogel Arena and the school play, “I Need a Vacation!” We are all excited for this fun week!"

I would also like to recognize two recent events at St. John’s. Many students in grades 3-8 were involved in a sport this winter season. Ten students played basketball and five students were cheerleaders. The basketball team finished their season with a 13-8 record and the cheerleaders led our fans with great cheers!

And lastly, our sympathies from the faculty and staff here at St. John’s to the families of the three area Sleepy Eye boys involved in last week’s tragic accident.
