  • The Sleepy Eye Public junior varsity girls basketball team moved to 5-0 after it defeated Martin Luther and Minnesota Valley Lutheran last week.

On Dec. 16, the Indians took on Martin Luther where they won 47-20. Coach Nichole Schroepfer said it was a convincing win over the Knights.

“The girls really won the game defensively by pressuring and getting steals for layups,” Schroepfer said. “We held them to nine points in the second half; however we only scored 15 in the second half. Regardless, scoring was pretty even throughout, giving us a good team win.”

Sleepy Eye went 12-for-15 at the free throw line, which helped the team accumulate even more points during the game. McKenzie Cselovszki led the team with 11 points, and went three-for-four at the line. Behind her was Brianna Polesky, who recorded nine points on the night. Meanwhile, Mya Ibberson and Bethany Seifert each had eight points.

Schroepfer said win or lose, her team is learning with every game.

“We are working on getting more consistent and focusing on improving every game,” Schroepfer said.

The next day, the Indians hosted Minnesota Valley Lutheran where they won 41-28. Sleepy Eye was outscored 19-16 in the first half, but dominated in the second half after scoring 25 while holding the Chargers to just nine.

“A lethargic first half left us trailing three; after making a few slight adjustments at the break, the B-squad girls came out in the second half with more spark,” Schroepfer said. “Defensive stops and cutting back on fouls helped us go on a run late in the second half.”

Polesky led the Indians with 15 points and made six of seven free throws. Cselovszki made 12 points, while Sam Walter had seven.
