  • As the year winds down, I would like to remind everyone, if you have recently purchased new energy star appliances, energy efficient lighting, L.E.D. Christmas lighting, made heating or cooling upgrades or done anything to improve the energy efficiency of your home or business be sure to turn in your rebate application forms before the end of the year in order to receive your full rebate on your upgrades. If you are still thinking of making such a purchase or upgrade there is still time, but paperwork will need to be turned in before the end of the year.

Looking ahead to 2014, there are a couple changes on rebate amounts coming. Energy Star rated clothes washers have previously earned a $50 rebate. The rebate will be $25 in 2014. Screw in L.E.D. light bulbs under 10 watts currently qualify for a $10 rebate and those over 10 watts qualify for a $15 rebate. In 2014, all screw in L.E.D. light bulbs will earn a $10 rebate. This is still an excellent value as the price of these light bulbs has come down quite a bit recently. Many can be purchased in the $10-$20 range. L.E.D. lamps are at full light immediately upon being turned on, most are dimmable, and energy star rated bulbs should last 20,000-30,000 hours. If you are lighting a large space such as a garage, shop or auditorium or other large facility, high bay LED fixtures can be an excellent choice. Like LED lamps, they have come down considerably in price. Along with using less energy, they are also virtually maintenance free so the need to change burned out bulbs or fluorescent tubes goes away. This can be a big deal for facilities with tall ceilings and light fixtures that are hard and even dangerous to get at. The combinations for these installations are many so be sure to check with Sleepy Eye utilities for rebate offers specific to your application. Look for all of our Savings Plus rebate programs on our website www.sleepyeye-mn.com. Click on utilities and then on the blue Energy Star logo, or call our office at 794-4371.

Changing direction a bit, with two snow events already in December, it appears the new snow emergency system has worked well. I appreciate everyone keeping tabs on the radio and online, to be informed of when Sleepy Eye is in a snow emergency and for moving your vehicles off the streets so they can be cleared of the snow.

Obviously, the fewer vehicles in the way of the snow plows, the more efficient our plowing operation can be.

And finally, I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.
