It was a battle of the birds in girls hockey on Dec. 13 at the New Ulm Civic Center.

The New Ulm/Sleepy Eye girls played host to a non-conference game against Chaska/Chanhassen, where the Storm Hawks gave the Eagles their second loss in a row.

It was a game of catch-up for NUSE throughout most of the game, as Chaska/Chanhassen was quick on the puck and scored in the first period which put the pressure on the Eagles. The 0-1 deficit continued all the way until the third period, when the Storm Hawks added two more goals to their score, including a short-handed one, in less than three minutes time. NUSE was finally able to put something on the board when Lexi Weiss hit in a shot with assists from Morgan Schaefer and Brook Schugel. Overall, the Eagles had nine power play opportunities throughout the game but failed to capitalize on them.

New Ulm’s Julia Schaefer saved 39 out of 42 shots made by Chaska/Chanhassen. Meanwhile, the Eagles offense only came up with 24 shots on the night. NUSE moves to 8-2 in the South Central, with St. Peter trailing at 3-7-1.
