After starting the season at a perfect 8-0, the New Ulm/Sleepy Eye girls hockey team was handed its first loss on Dec. 6.

The Eagles weren’t able to score a single goal against the non-conference 1AA team of Dodge County. The game was played in Kasson, where the Wildcats dominated the rink in all aspects.

NUSE goalie Bailey Landreville saved 35 out of the 42 shots on goal made by Dodge County, while the Eagles offense was held to only 17 shots on the night. The Wildcats went up 1-0 in the first period on an even strength goal, but added four more in the second period alone. Half of the goals in the second period came off of power plays, after NUSE’s Brook Schugel and Lexie Weiss were called for minor penalties.

The Eagles had two power play opportunities in the third period, but failed to take advantage of the extra player. Meanwhile, Dodge County added two more even strength goals to their total to take the game 7-0.

Despite the loss, NUSE still leads the South Central conference at 8-1-0. St. Peter is second with a record of 3-6-1.
