  • Marvin M. Manthei, age 85, of Rice Lake, Wisc. died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, Wisc.

  • Marvin M. Manthei, age 85, of Rice Lake, Wisc. died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, Wisc. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2013 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Rice Lake with Pastor Peter Muschinske officiating. Burial will be in Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner, Wisc. with military honors accorded by the Rice Lake Veterans Center Honor Guard. Visitation is from 1 - 4 p.m. Sunday at the Skinner Funeral Home in Rice Lake, and for one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. The Skinner Funeral Home of Rice Lake is serving the family.
    Marvin M. Manthei was born June 27, 1928 in Fergus Falls, to Benjamin and Ella Manthei. On January 16, 1951 Marv enlisted in the United States Army and served his country until his discharge later that year on October 1. He returned to Fergus Falls, and on November 23, 1952, he married Kathryn Orpen at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls. Marv was employed at several Fergus Fall's businesses, until he and Kathryn moved to Sleepy Eye, in 1963. In August of 1982 they moved to Rice Lake, Wisc., where he has resided since. In March, 1998, Marv retired from the St. Paul Pioneer Press newspaper, after a career of 36 years and 7 months. Marv was a member of the Rice Lake Moose Lodge, the Rice Lake Elks Club and the Rice Lake American Legion. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing and rose gardening. His biggest joy was spending time with his family.
    Marv is survived by his children, Sharon Manthei (Mark Demma),Apple Valley, and children, Matt and Jennie Hinz; Steven Manthei of Eau Claire, and children, David (Emily McCaughey) and Sarah Manthei; Susan (Pat) Bruggeman of Sleepy Eye, and children, Andrea (Nate) Konkol, Amy (Jesse) Hoffmann, and Alex Bruggeman; oone great-granddaughter, Naima Hinz; sister-in-law Dorothy Orpen, Long Beach, Calif.; brother-in-law Charles Stevens, Appleton; several nieces and nephews.
    In addition to his parents, Marv was preceded in death by his wife Kathryn, on March 13, 2012; sisters Alice Fisher, Gladys Collins, Myrtle Stevens, and Mildred Manthei; and brothers Clarence and Leonard Manthei.
