  • The Brown County Historical Society Museum unveiled the Menzel Christmas Village with free admission on Friday, Nov. 29.

Louise and Walter Menzel began collecting figurines for their Christmas Village in 1937. Many of the pieces are from the U.S. and others were purchased on the Menzel’s trips to Germany and Switzerland.

The Menzel’s would invite neighborhood children to their house during the Christmas season to view the beautiful, detailed scenes. When the task of putting up the village became too much for Louise, she donated the village to the BCHS Museum.

Since 1983, many families have made it a Christmas tradition to visit the museum and view the village. The collection has over 1,000 pieces including a ceramic village over 100 years old, an early version of the popular “Snowbabies” with painted hands and feet and alpine children dressed in hand crocheted clothing.
