  • Monday evening was my granddaughter Caitlin's school Christmas program. According to my rule book for grandmas, one needs to be in attendance if at all possible.
Little Miss Caitlin's school is in the small community of Houston which is south of Winona. Getting from Sleepy Eye to Houston is not just a quick drive acrosss town.
I informed Penny I would be leaving for the day a bit early because I needed to attend a special event.
The drive until Eyota, which is just east of Rochester was no problem. We were making good time and would arrive at our destination in plenty of time to hopefully see Caitlin before the program and then get a good seat. However, the remainder of the way was a bit of a white knuckle drive. The snow was coming down heavy and was the kind that can hypnotize you. But slow and steady like the tortoise, we made it in plenty of time.
When Jessica walked us to Caitlin's room, she told her someone wanted to see her. It took a moment to register but when she did, her beautiful blue eyes lit up and she said, "Grandma, you made it!" She jumped into my arms giving me the biggest hug and held tight to me for several minutes. In that moment there was no snow storm blowing outside. There was only the warmth of pure love from her little body to mine.
Whether or not you like the events your children or grandchildren are involved in, nothing is more important than when they see you in the crowd smiling back at them or encouraging them to do their best. There is only love and gratitude because you took the time to come to see them.
I would make that drive a hundred times again to let her know how important she is to me. There are more events my grandchildren are involved in this winter and like Caitlin, they will see me in the audience smiling back at them.
Thought for the week: Grandchildren complete the circle of love. – Author unknown.
