It was an arduous season opener for the New Ulm/Sleepy Eye boys hockey team on Nov. 30 at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Despite having 29 minutes of total penalties compared to eight from the Eagles, the Orono Spartans still managed to have 43 shots on goal. Thankfully, NUSE’s senior goalie Bach Kraus saved 37 of those 43 shots. But the combination of a physical Orono team along with a lack of offense from the Eagles was what broke the camel’s back.

The Spartans committed four penalties in the first period, including a check from behind and some misconduct which resulted in a 15 minute penalty for an Orono player. But NUSE failed to take advantage of the power plays while the Spartans scored their first goal, which was at even strength.

Orono brought the score to 4-0 in the second period after a short-handed goal along with two even strength ones. Meanwhile, the Eagles scored their first of the night early in the third period from a power play goal by senior Judd Davis. Assists on the goal came from juniors Alex Stark and Brandon Helget. A total of seven penalties were made in the third, and Davis took advantage of one made by the Spartans and scored the second and final goal for NUSE late in the third on another power play. He was assisted by junior Wyatt Peterson. But the Spartans scored two goals of their own in the third which sealed the win.

The Eagles move to 0-1 and will host the defending section champion team of Marshall on Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
