The New Ulm/Sleepy Eye girls hockey team has started its season with six straight wins.
On Nov. 9, the Eagles traveled to Mankato West High School where they opened their season with a close 4-3 victory. After a scoreless first period, the Scarlets scored twice in the second period to put the pressure on NUSE. But the Eagles had their own offensive strike after they scored all four of their goals in the third period which was enough to win. The goals came from Morgan Schaefer, Brook Schugel, Erika Ries, and Brittany Denn.
On Nov. 12, the girls took on Willmar in another away game. The Eagles took an early lead with goals by Ries and Schugel in the first period. After another scoreless second period, NUSE once again dominated the third period with four more goals to win 6-3. This time they came from Lexie Weiss, Denn, Schaefer, and Schugel.
The Eagles had their first home game on Nov. 16 where fans were treated to another close thriller. The Warriors put the pressure on as they took a 2-0 lead in the first. But NUSE had a few tricks up its sleeve as a goal by Denn brought the score to 1-3 in the second. The defense held strong in the final two periods while the offense scored two more to take the game 3-2. The final two goals for the Eagles came from Weiss and Schaefer.
The next home game was quite the opposite of close. NUSE demolished their opponent in a 8-1 slaughter over Marshall. Only three of the eight goals were scored in the first two periods, while the other five came in the third.
On Nov. 22, the Eagles took on the 7A team of Eveleth-Gilbert on the road. NUSE easily controlled the game and was able to take their fifth straight win, 5-2.
The team traveled to Moose Lake High School the next day to take on Moose Lake-Willow River. The Eagles beat the Rebels 4-2 to remain undefeated.
NUSE leads the South Central conference with a 6-0 record while Fairmont is at 3-1. Meanwhile, St. Peter/LeSueur-Henderson/Tri-City United is at 2-3-1 and Waseca is 0-2-1.
