Walking around A New Beginning Animal Rescue in rural Belview, a group of animal enthusiasts were working diligently doing whatever they could.
"We're here to help however we can," said Kathie Peltier of Ham Lake. "We came out to show our support for what Chuck (Schmidt) is doing and also to help him by providing some needed supplies to continue his work."
She hopes others also respond.
Peltier said she heard about Schmidt on the "On the Road Again" program Jason Davis does on TV, adding she felt compelled from that moment to do what she could to help.
Peltier said she recently had a booth at a craft fair and donated her proceeds to the local rescue.
Word got out when Peltier began talking about the project she was doing, and others also got involved. In the end, two vehicles from the metro area arrived at the rural Belview home with loads of food and other items Schmidt can use to care for the dogs and cats.
Peltier said the group also attended the recent zoning permit hearing for Schmidt ex-pressing their support for what he does. The planning and zoning commission approved the conditional use permit for the animal rescue, and this past Tuesday the Redwood County Board also approved the permit, which allows Schmidt to have no more than 50 domesticated animals.
"This is not a drop off," stressed Peltier. "Chuck is doing the best he can."
A project started at the animal rescue erected some kennels, but there is still a lot of work to do, including putting gravel in the kennels and building dog houses for the animals.
The plan is to get the dogs in the new kennels and then to tear down, older existing kennel areas to then build a fenced off area behind the buildings that could be used to exercise the animals.
"We need volunteers to help get all of that done," Peltier said, adding even if a local group of a few people could get together for one day they could really make a difference in accomplishing all that needs to be done at the rescue.
A Facebook Page has been set up to provide updates, and pictures of some of the animals have been posted. They are up for adoption. Find more at www.facebook.com/anewbeginningrescue.
