  • Sleepy Eye Wide Awakes 4-H plans for year ahead

  • This fall, the Sleepy Eye Wide Awakes 4-H Club members have been busy planning for the upcoming 2013-14 year. They have had two meetings where members have set goals, elected club officers, signed up for committees, selected community service projects and selected project areas that they want to learn about.

  • This fall, the Sleepy Eye Wide Awakes 4-H Club members have been busy planning for the upcoming 2013-14 year. They have had two meetings where members have set goals, elected club officers, signed up for committees, selected community service projects and selected project areas that they want to learn about.
     
    The 4-H organization is for youth in kindergarten through 12th grade, to learn about new projects, develop leadership skills, and skills in running meetings. The Sleepy Eye Wide Awakes Club meets monthly at the Sleepy Eye Public School Ag room. The leaders are Mary Hoffmann, Leslie Bianchi and Jill Nelson.     Club officers for 2013-14 are president, Josie Schieffert; vice president, Lauren Klein; secretary, Cassidy Hoffmann; assistant secretary, Emma Schieffert; treasurer, Abbie Riederer; and reporters, Josie Lang and Morgan Hoffmann.
     
    The club goals for the 4-H club include having fun at meetings, working hard on projects during the year to try to achieve at least one blue ribbon, encourage three new families to join the club, learn about 4-H projects at meetings and have every member participate at the county fair.
     
    Out of the meeting came several community service project ideas for 2012-14. Those include Food for Kidz, Nursing Home door decorations, Valentines for Vets, Adopt-a-Family, Birthday cakes at Divine Providence and Birthday Boxes for the food shelf.
     
    Subjects to be discussed at 4-H project informational meetings include Livestock – Rabbits and Beef; Plant Sciences – Flowers and Lawn/Landscape; Family Consumer Sciences – Food and Nutrition and Clothing; Natural Resources – Fishing and Shooting Sports; Expressive and Communication Arts – Creative Arts and Video; Mechanical Science – Electric and Computer; Personal Growth and Development – Health and Safety and Youth Leadership.
     
    Several committee members were also chosen for the various projects. Those committees include the banner, scrapbook, community service and project education committees.
     
    The banner committee is a group chosen to work on the banner for the county fair. Those members include Josie Lang, Nathan Jorgensen, Josh Nelson, Jadon Haala, Jana Lang, Emma Schieffert, Lauren Klein, Morgan Klein, Jack Windschitl and Sydney Hauger.
     
    The scrapbook committee puts together a scrapbook throughout the year. The committee members include Megan Ahlness, Martina Nienhaus, Caleb Hauger, Ellen Windschitl, Miah Braun, Anna Rossbach, Sarah Rossbach, Lauren Klein, Morgan Klein.
     
    The Community Service Committee coordinates service activities for the club. Members include Winsten Nienhaus, Logan Richert, Samantha Richert, Jonathan Petermann, Jasmine Petermann, Jana Lang, Cassidy Hoffmann, Morgan Hoffmann, Carmen Lendt, Abby Bianchi, Isaac Nelson, Lizzy Bianchi and Josie Lang.
