  • The manly month of November is here. November triggers the month long celebration called NoShavember, where participating men shave on Oct. 31 and don’t shave for the entire month of November. This observance became popular back in my college days and I thought it would be fun to continue the tradition.

This year I’m bending the rules a little bit. Mainly due to laziness, I haven’t been shaving for about three weeks now. Now that it’s NoShavember, I decided to keep it going instead of starting with a clean slate. To be fair, growing beards has always been difficult for me. I don’t really understand why I can’t grow a nice beard, because my dad was the king of beards. Looking back at old photos of his always got me excited to think I could grow a beard like that one day. But for some reason it seems my scruffy facial hair doesn’t grow past half an inch in length and it just looks messy. I wonder if there is some beard growing trick I am missing and once I find it I’ll look like someone from ZZ Top.

So if you see me in November, I probably won’t have the baby face look as I do in my column photo. Hopefully by the end of the month I will look like a Red Sox player or anyone in the NHL.

In other news, November might be a State Tournament month for the Knights. St. Mary’s football team is off to State and will compete in its first game on Saturday. If they keep winning they will play all the way until Nov. 30 for the State Championship. If they win this Saturday in Marshall, the final two games of the tournament will be held at the Metrodome, which would be really fun to cover.

But the Metrodome experience only happens if the Knights get the win this Saturday against Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity. The good news for St. Mary’s is that the Bulldogs have a lack of state tournament experience. Compared to the Knights, who have made it to State for now three years in a row, the most recent State appearance for the Bulldogs was in 2011, where they lost in the first round. Also, they have lost three games this season, while St. Mary’s remains undefeated. Because of these reasons I believe the Knights are slightly favored to win.
