  • The Sleepy Eye girls cross country team won the Conference Championship on Oct. 15 in Winthrop.

The boys and girls teams traveled to Winthrop Golf Course to compete in a cold, rainy, but successful Conference Meet.

The girls team won the Conference Championship, after eighth grader Brianna Polesky finished first place while Mary Joyce finished second place in the race. The team took first with 25 points while MVL and SCMC took second and third. Polesky’s finish also earned her the Conference MVP award. Both Jenny Lax and Cassidy Hacker earned All Conference honors by finishing fifth and seventh. Meanwhile, Emily Schumacher earned All Conference Honorable Mention by placing tenth.

For the boys, junior Stephen Joyce put it into high gear over the final half mile to move from fifth and finish third in the race, which puts him on the All Conference team. Joyce led the Sleepy Eye boys to a third place finish among the four teams.

“I was very pleased with the effort shown by all of our runners,” Coach Scott DeMaris said. “It was a great time for Brianna to capture her first win in a cross country race. The third place finish for Stephen is his highest ever in a varsity race as well.”

Previously, the Sleepy Eye cross country team traveled to Madelia Golf Course on Oct. 10 to compete in one of the last meets of the season.

It was a sunny, 75-degree day where eight area teams ran the mostly flat course at the golf club. The Sleepy Eye girls team took fourth place overall. Polesky led the pack with a nine-place finish out of 84 runners. Her time was 17:04 for the 4K course. The next four finishers were Hacker, Schumacher, Mariah Salfer and Lax. The four ran well together and Salfer had her best race so far this season.

For the boys, junior Stephen Joyce ran the 5K in a time of 19:21,which got him a 28th place finish. The boys took seventh place out of eight teams.
