  • What appears to be swarms of geese have descended on Sleepy Eye Lake in the past week.

According to DNR Wildlife Manager Jeff Zajac, what is probably happening is that these Canadian Geese have found a safe refuge away from harassment by hunters during waterfowl season.

Zajac said geese are very gregarious and when you see five or six, there will be double that amount the following day. Parks and lakes are ideal locations for Canadian Geese because there is short vegetation, water and a food supply.

Generally docile animals, the geese pose no threat. They can be a nuisance because of their droppings that tend to build up when there are large numbers.
