The Sleepy Eye cross country team was at home for the first time this season as it hosted four area teams for a meet at the Sleepy Eye Golf Course on Oct. 7.
The event was recheduled from Oct. 3 because of the stormy weather. It was a good decision, because this time it was a warm and sunny day as over 100 athletes competed at the Sleepy Eye Golf Course.
Eighth grader Brianna Polesky took second place out of 45 runners in the girls event with a time of 16:42. Polesky said it felt nice to run so well at the home town meet.
“I just came back from sickness so I wasn’t expecting to do as well as I did, so I was pretty happy,” Polesky said.
Although Polesky became healthy enough for the meet, two of her teammates weren’t able to compete because of their own illnesses. The girls team took third place out of five teams with 63 points, which could have been a better result had the whole team been there. The girls were only six points away from the second place team of Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial. Cassidy Hacker, Jenny Lax, and Emily Schumacher were behind Polesky with 13th, 14th, and 15th place finishes, respectfully.
For the boys event, junior Stephen Joyce led the way for Sleepy Eye with a ninth place finish. Ben Jakobitz was behind him with a 17th place finish, while Nick DeMaris took 19th. The boys team took fourth place overall.
The next event for the Sleepy Eye teams will be the conference meet on Oct. 15 in Winthrop.
