  • Ray  Mielke, 89, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at his home in Sleepy Eye. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye with Pastor Robert Hellmann officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Home Cemetery. Visitation was Sunday and again Monday from 12 – 1 p.m. All the visitation will be held at the church. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.     Raymond Edward Mielke, the son of Otto and Lillian (Krebs) Mielke, was born on January 2, 1924 in Bowdon, N.D. He graduated from Bowdon High School in 1941. Ray enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942, serving in the Pacific Fleet until his honorable discharged in 1946. In 1949 he opened an accounting office in Sleepy Eye where he was still active. On March 30, 1951, Ray was united in marriage to Thera Lokken. Ray was an active member serving many offices within his church and was involved in the starting of Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School. He was an avid sports fan especially if it involved his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Sleepy Eye VFW and American Legion, Sleepy Eye Baseball Association, and Sleepy Eye Public Utilities where he served as a commissioner for many years.  The family prefers memorials to St. John’s Lutheran Church or to Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School (MVL). As a baptized child of the Triune God, he was kept faithful by the Gospel to the point of death and has received Jesus’ crown of life.
    Ray is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Pastor David Russow of New Hope; sons and daughters-in-law, David of St. Cloud, James and Sarah, John and Angela all of Sleepy Eye, Stephen and Julie of New Ulm; nineteen grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren;  brother, Donald of Spring Hills, Florida; sister-in-law, Colleen Lokken of Upsala; and several nieces and nephews. 
    He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1998; his son Daniel; sisters and brothers-in-law, Elvira and Albert Brynjulson, Myrtle and Kenneth Haraldson; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Mielke; and brother-in-law, Alton Lokken.
