The Sleepy Eye Public volleyball team is on a three game losing streak after losses to St. Mary’s, Loyola Catholic and New Ulm Cathedral.
On Sept. 30, the Indians were on the road as they faced Mankato Loyola Catholic, where a five-set game played out.
The first set was the closest one of the game. It was a back-and-forth battle, with solid hitting, passing, and communication on both sides. After multiple ties and hard fought rallies, Sleepy Eye came out on top and won 25-23.
The second set belonged to Loyola, as the Crusaders dominated on both offense and defense. They showed strong serves and consistency, while the Indians failed to get any momentum. Loyola only allowed Sleepy Eye to win ten points in the second set as they won 25-10.
The momentum continued for the Crusaders in the third set. The Indians were able to hold their own in the middle of the set, but gave up costly points due to errors and lost 18-25.
It was the exact opposite scenario in the next set, as Sleepy Eye was determined to get back into the game. The Indians put together multiple strings of points and won 25-18.
The fifth and final set was a 15-8 victory for Loyola. The Crusaders got an early lead and it was too much for Sleepy Eye to handle.
Senior Claire Krumbach led the Indians with 14 kills, four digs, and three blocks. Jamie Wells recorded six kills of her own, while Justine Gonzalez led in set assists with 19.
On Oct. 1, Sleepy Eye hosted New Ulm Cathedral. The Greyhounds were unstoppable in the first set as they took full advantage of the errors made by the Indians and controlled the ball throughout. Cathedral scored 11 points in a row toward the end and won the first set 25-9.
Sleepy Eye came out determined in the second set. The Indians played a lot more consistent and battled hard in every point. The Greyhounds were up 12-7 when the longest and most exciting rally of the game took place. After some controlled chaos, Sleepy Eye was able to win the point which gave it some momentum as the team scored two more points in a row to cut the lead to only 10-12. But Cathedral once again pulled ahead and took set two 25-19.
The Indians were worn out to start the third set, which resulted in more errors and more points taken by the Greyhounds. It was almost a mirror image of the first set as Cathedral won it 25-11.
