The St. Mary’s junior high football team has won its past four games.

On Sept. 12, the Knights hosted Cedar Mountain/Comfrey. The Knights established a solid running game and scored three rushing touchdowns in the first half. The Cougars responded with three big plays of their own and the score was 22-20 St. Mary’s going into half.

The second half belonged to the Knights, as the defense held strong and the offense was able to score a few more. St. Mary’s won 44-28.

On Sept. 19, the Knights were on home field again as they hosted New Ulm Cathedral. The game was low scoring at first, as St. Mary’s led 16-12 with a minute left in the third quarter. But then the Knights went on an offensive strike as they scored a touchdown on their next two drives, with touchdown runs of over 50 yards each time. The final was 30-12 St. Mary’s.

On Sept. 24, the Knights had their closest game yet as they defeated St. Paul’s Lutheran 34-26. St. Paul’s started the game with two rushing touchdowns, one of which was a surprise run on a fourth and long. After three quarters, the score was tied 20-20. St. Mary’s took the lead for the first time in the fourth, but St. Paul’s responded with another touchdown with two minutes left to make the score 28-26, Knights still ahead as the two-point conversion attempt by St. Paul’s was no good. St. Mary’s scored once more with 58 seconds remaining off of a 45 yard run.

Most recently, the Knights took on the crosstown Indians on Sept. 30. Similar to the varsity game, this game went into overtime as neither team scored in regulation.

In overtime, St. Mary’s scored a touchdown on two running plays and made the two-point conversion. Sleepy Eye Public responded with a touchdown on their first play, but wasn’t able to convert the two points, and the Knights won 8-6.

St. Mary’s is now 4-0 and will play BLHS on Oct. 3 at 4:30 p.m. in Hector.
