  • The St. Mary’s and Sleepy Eye Public volleyball teams are hosting “Dig Pink” events at their respective schools next week.

In collaboration with October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, the “Dig Pink” events are fundraisers to help fight breast cancer. The first event will be on Oct. 1 when the Indians host New Ulm Cathedral. Two days later, the St. Mary’s volleyball team will have its own “Dig Pink” night when they host Wabasso. Both games will start at 7 p.m. but the “Dig Pink” activities will begin before then.

Activities during the events include silent auctions, baked goods for sale, and honoring those who are survivors or are currently fighting breast cancer. Money raised from the events will go toward the Side-Out Foundation, an organization that promotes Breast Cancer awareness and education.

The term “side-out” refers to when a volleyball team wins a point while their opponent is serving, and regaining the serve and control of play. The Side-Out Foundation website states, “It is hoped that this Side-Out will do the same for breast cancer patients, providing them with the support, education and best available treatments to regain control of their lives.”
So be sure to wear pink, bring a couple of bucks to donate, and come cheer on the Sleepy Eye volleyball teams next week, all for a good cause.
