As I look from my desk through the small window to the tree line just to the southeast, I can see the bright sun ready to blanket our community with warmth.
As I look from my desk through the small window to the tree line just to the southeast, I can see the bright sun ready to blanket our community with warmth. I wonder to myself how many more days like this will there be before the cold white blankets us? Hopefully there are many and that Autumn, leading into Old Man Winter, is extended to enjoy the cool nights and warm days.
As September rolls to a close in just a few short days, it brings with it the annual Great Grassroots Gathering in Allison Park. Sunday, Sept. 29 is the date for the annual event. And, while Grassroots has been going on for many years, I believe I have only attended it a couple of times. Crazy? I know! There has always been something going on that weekend for me and didn’t allow me to attend. I hope to get some good ideas or gifts for this all-to-soon Christmas.
While summer has faded into fall, it has brought with it a sea of red that I continue to see in my sleep! Tomatoes are abundant and we have canned almost 50 quarts of salsa and chili sauce.
Friends recommended a packet of seasoning that you just add to tomatoes to make the chili sauce. Schutz Family Foods has it on the shelf along with ketchup and salsa recipes too. It’s pretty easy and the taste is great! I would recommend more tomatoes than the recipe calls for unless you only want a couple of quarts of smokin’ sauce.
For now I hope the balance of tomatoes in the garden are just the little ones you can pop in your mouth for a tasty treat.
Harvesting a gardening brings with it a lot of work, but it also give you fresh fruits and vegetables all winter long that are prepared without a bunch of preservatives and things you cannot pronounce in the ingredient list. Enjoy the delightful days of fall.
Don’t forget Grassroots this weekend! You might be able to find a gift or two for your Christmas list. Maybe I’ll see you there!
