The Sleepy Eye Public football team traveled to Wabasso on Sept. 21 where the Indians were handed their fourth loss of the season.

The Rabbits had strong momentum from the start, as it was Wabasso’s Homecoming game and the team had just come off of a close win over Springfield. Wabasso took a 30-6 lead in the first quarter with its powerhouse offense.

The Indians were able to score again in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t nearly enough to fix the mistakes they made. Wabasso was able to score off of a fumble recovery, an interception, and other costly errors by Sleepy Eye throughout the game.

“Wabasso took full advantage of our mistakes,” Indians Coach Cory Haala said. ”Our miscues on offense have been too much to overcome, on the flip side, defensively we have not been able to create any turnovers.”

Matt Berkner had eight carries for 97 yards and one touchdown on the night to lead Sleepy Eye. Berkner also caught two passes for 24 yards and had a solo tackle and seven tackle assists on defense. Austin Fischer recorded the other touchdown with a quarterback sneak. Juan Montemayor had a great kickoff return and led in rushing with 31 yards. Defensively, Montemayor led with 10 tackle assists, while Justin Kotten had two solo tackles and eight assists. Finally, Austin Trebesch had one solo and five assists.

The Indians will host Martin County West on Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. for their Homecoming game.
