The Sleepy Eye cross country team traveled to Milaca on Sept. 21 to compete in one of the largest high school cross country meets in the World.
The 2013 Milaca Mega Meet featured over 100 teams and around 4,000 runners. The event was held at the Stones Throw Golf Course and the terrain was mostly flat. It was a perfect day for running, as it was 50-60 degrees and cloudy in the morning, only to warm up later.
There wasn’t too much anxiety shown from the local runners because of the sheer size of the event, as the Sleepy Eye athletes finished well with some top times. For the girls, eighth grader Brianna Polesky finished fourth place out of 209 eighth grade girl athletes. She was awarded with a trophy for her top seven finish. Meanwhile, the team of ninth graders took ninth place out of 16 teams. Freshman Mary Joyce earned a top 25 ribbon after she placed 21st out of 194 runners in the event to lead the team. Cassidy Hacker and Jenny Lax were right behind her, and finished 31st and 38th respectfully. For the junior varsity, senior Emily Schumacher took 62nd place out of 470 runners. Finally, Kira DeMaris led the seventh graders with a 46th place finish out of 207 runners.
For the boys, junior Stephen Joyce led the varsity AA boys event with a 74th place finish out of 149 runners. For the 10th graders, Ben Jakobitz finished with a respectable time of 19:18.9 and finished 78th out of 283. Caleb Kirchberg took 184th place out of 339 in the ninth grade boys event, while Isaac Nelson led the eighth graders with a 153rd place finish out of 321 runners.
