  • Hispanic Catholics from the Churches of St. Mary in Sleepy Eye and St. Andrew in Fairfax gathered for an afternoon of fun on Sunday, July 14.

Sponsored by the diocesan Office of Hispanic Ministry, the event–“Fiesta Familiar” (Family Festival), the first of its kind in the diocese–was held at an outdoor pavilion on the farm of Gerald and Janet Peichel in rural Fairfax. Approximately 90 attended.

Msgr. Eugene Lozinski, pastor at the Church of St. Mary, celebrated Mass outdoors at noon with Fr. Jeff Horejsi, pastor at the Church of St. Andrew, concelebrating. In his homily, Msgr. Lozinski said it was a great day for the two communities to be together, and he exhorted them to serve others like the Good Samaritan did in the Gospel.

After Mass, Johann Alvarez, coordinator of Hispanic youth ministry for the diocese, led the children in several games. They also played pickup games of volleyball and baseball later in the afternoon.

No one went hungry at the potluck lunch, which included chicken cooked in “mole” (A Mexican sauce for meats), “carne asada” (grilled meat), flour tortillas, salads and rice pudding.
