The Sleepy Eye Herald Dispatch - Sleepy Eye, MN
  • Fall and fútbol

  • Fall begins Sept. 22. Pretty crazy how fast this year has gone by. It won’t be long until we will be out making snowmen again.

But for now, Americans can relax and enjoy fall in all of its glory. Fall is my favorite season. The crisp air, the changes of color, pumpkin flavored things and football of course. I don’t know why, but for some reason we are all so obsessed with the sport that is only played here in the U.S. It seems as though football, football football is all the talk in the sports world at the moment.

Maybe this is why I forgot the other football. Futbol, or soccer, is the local sport I kind of forgot about until now. This is the first year where Sleepy Eye students have been able to join the New Ulm Eagles soccer team, which is a co-op between MVL, New Ulm High, New Ulm Catheral, and now Sleepy Eye. I am a big soccer fan, therefore I surprised myself the other day when I forgot about the New Ulm team. I apologize for not having any soccer coverage and I will try and include some soccer stories in the upcoming weeks. I believe there is only one athlete from Sleepy Eye on the boys team, and I’m not sure how many local students are on the girls team. Either way, I feel bad for not including them in the paper each week.

Speaking of futbol, the U.S. Men’s National Team is officially qualified to play in the 2014 World Cup, after a dominant 2-0 shutout over Mexico on Sept. 10. The next game for the U.S. will be against Jamaica on Oct. 11 in Kansas City, Kans. A couple of close friends will be at the game and asked me to join, but I won’t be able to which is a bummer. However, I still plan on traveling to Brazil next year which will probably be the most fun I will have in my life.

Meanwhile, in the American version of football, Viking fans can rejoice as the Browns will be at the metrodome this Sunday and will most likely result in the first win for the Vikings. Locally, St. Mary’s will be traveling to Springfield on Sept. 20 which will be a fun game to watch as both teams are looking good this year.
