  • The River Valley Wildcats girls tennis team lost 0-7 against Luverne on Sept. 5 and went 0-3 at the Redwood Valley tournament last weekend.

In Luverne, the Wildcats struggled to win tiebreakers, as the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches along with the No. 4 singles match were decided by third set tiebreakers, which all went to Luverne.

Sophomore Natalie Stevens and junior Erika Ries took a dominant 6-2 first set at No. 1 doubles for River Valley. They were looking to end the match after they led early in the second set, but the Cardinal duo came back and won a close 7-5 second set, which led to the deciding third set tiebreaker.

Things were reversed at No. 2 doubles, as juniors Ashley Johnson and Carissa Evers fell in the first set but came back with a strong 6-2 second set win before falling to the dreaded tiebreaker in the third.

Eighth grader Hanna Himmelman made her varsity debut with a 6-4 first set win at No. 4 singles before falling 2-6 in the second set. It was a back and forth battle in the third but Samantha Pierce of Luverne won the tiebreaker 7-4.

On Sept. 7, River Valley lost to three separate teams at the Redwood Valley Tournament. The Wildcats came in shorthanded, after some varsity players were out of town and two girls had to quit playing because of the heat.

But the re-arrangement of lineups and teams didn’t stop River Valley from having some close matches with MACCRAY school to start the day. Four of the seven matches were decided by third set super tiebreakers, including the match that gave the Wolverines the victory. Kalyn Haas and Lauren Laffen were able to pull out wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectfully, while the eighth grade team of Lauren Klein and Himmelman got the tiebreak win at No. 3 doubles. But Stevens and sophomore Alyssa Rubey fell at No. 3 and No. 4 singles after the deciding tiebreakers, which was enough for MACCRAY to get the 4-3 win.

Next up was a rematch with Fairmont, which resulted in the same 0-7 score as the last meet-up between the two teams. The Wildcats had a few tight sets at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, but the Cardinals were too tough to break.

The final meet of the day was a 1-6 loss against Redwood Valley, with the River Valley victory going to Klein at No. 4 singles.

Although River Valley lost all three events, Coach Bradd Goede said he was proud of his team.

“It was a tough situation dealing with the heat, but all the teams had to do that,” Goede said. “I’m very proud of some of the more veteran players for dealing with a lot of changes and new partners in doubles and making the best of it and playing some very competitive tennis.”
