  • Welcome back to another year at St. Mary’s Catholic School! Despite the hot temperatures, our students and staff were ready and eager to begin another year of learning, growing and having fun!

Our maintenance staff spent the summer cleaning, repairing and remodeling in order to have our building and grounds ready for our opening day. We are blessed to have several new faculty members: Julie Carlson (Guidance Counselor), Katie Moosbrugger (Media Center/Journalism), Jacob Flaherty (High School Religion) and St. Mary’s alum, Kelly Krzmarzick (4th Grade). We were once again accredited as we continue to work on our strategic plan and meet the rigorous standards set by MNSAA. During the week prior to school starting, our faculty was busy with a variety of opportunities to enhance their teaching skills. Travis Raske presented a wealth of information on the best ways to utilize iPads in the classroom, a particularly timely topic as the elementary school recently purchased 20 new iPads and the teachers are excited to incorporate them into their lessons! Msgr. Lozinski offered faith enhancement to the staff as he shared the value and sacredness of the liturgy and Tami Dale of Catholic Charities spoke on depression and anxiety in children.

In addition, a special Back-to-School Night was held on Wednesday, Aug. 22. Our elementary students and their parents arrived, full of excitement to meet their teachers, visit their classrooms and organize their desks. Our incoming seventh graders and their parents also visited the school to do much the same thing as they met the junior high staff, discovered where their various classrooms were, and organized their lockers! When the school year began on Monday, Aug. 26, St. Mary’s faculty and students opened the year as is tradition: with a Mass to thank God for another year of Catholic education. The teachers and students quickly returned to the routine of school. A Marathon Kick-Off on Aug. 29, complete with an all-school Pictionary game, generated excitement for the Marathon for Non-Public Education on Oct. 11. Plans are under way for the celebration of the 130th anniversary of St. Mary’s Catholic School. A full schedule is planned for Saturday, Sept. 14 with the Alumni and Friends Golf Tournament in the afternoon and a special anniversary dinner in the social room, complete with entertainment and alumni guest speakers. St. Mary’s is so proud of its long tradition of providing Catholic education in Sleepy Eye!

Our students are busy with various fall activities. The Student Council is already hard at work, preparing for the Homecoming celebration which will take place the week of Sept. 22. The academic studies, sports teams, cheerleaders and fine arts programs continue to work hard as well. The start of a new school is an exciting time, filled with new teachers, new subjects and new experiences! As one student said at our Open House, “I just love this school!” We too love St. Mary’s and look forward to the year ahead!
