The Sleepy Eye Indians were unable to score at their first football game of the season on Aug. 30 at Cedar Mountain/Comfrey.
A couple of tough injuries did not help Sleepy Eye in the game, as starting quarterback Saul Ibarra injured his knee early in the first quarter and was out for the rest of the game. The Indians lost junior Damian Todd as starting defensive end and outside linebacker due to a concussion in the first half as well.
Sophomore Austin Fischer led the offense with three completed passes for 54 yards as quarterback while rushing for another 32. Junior Matt Berkner completed a 32 yard pass and also had 30 yards rushing and two catches for 24 yards. Sophomore Dylan Klein had 20 yards rushing, and senior Austin Trebesch had two catches for 62 yards as wide receiver.
On the defensive side, Klein led the way with five solo tackles and six tackle assists. Berkner had two solos and five assists, while Alex Bruggeman also had two solos and recorded six assists.
The Indians will host the crosstown team of St. Mary’s on Friday at 7 p.m.
