  • Lack of experience came into play as the past two meets for the River Valley girls tennis team resulted in shutout losses.

The Wildcats fell prey to the veteran team of St. James on Aug. 29, as they lost in all seven matches in their first on the road meet of the season. Coach Bradd Goede said the loss was a good learning experience for the team.

“I thought our kids did a really nice job of coming in and not being intimidated,” Goede said. “We played very well against one of the best teams in Minnesota.”

The Saints, who feature a couple of girls with state tournament appearances, only allowed the Wildcats to win three games over the four matches at singles. All three games were won by Kacie Goblirsch, who gave up her first loss of the season.

It was a different story in doubles, as all three River Valley teams were able to win a few games in their sets but still came up short.

On Sept. 3, the Wildcats were back on home court as they hosted Fairmont. The Cardinals came out strong and showed dominance with their six returning seniors and took all seven matches. The only set won for River Valley was from sophomore Lauren Laffen, who fell 6-0 in the first set but got hopes up when she controlled the second set and won 6-2. Laffen showed determination in the final set and had some close games, but fell 6-0.

“Unfortunately, Fairmont’s experience at the varsity level was too much for us,” Goede said. “They never cracked and seemed to be in control of points on every court no matter how many good shots we made.”

The Wildcats are now 2-3 on the season, while St. James is 7-1 and Fairmont moves to 5-1.
