  • The Sleepy Eye girls cross country team took first place at the St. Peter meet on Aug. 30 to start the season.

The girls team won by a margin of four points, just in front of St. James to claim the on-the-road title. Eighth grader Brianna Polesky had the team’s top finish at sixth place, running the flat, two mile course in a time of 13:54. It was Polesky’s first ever cross country race. It was also the first race for Emily Schumacher, Mariah Salfer, and Kira DeMaris, who finished ninth, 15th, and 16th, respectfully.

“It was great to see the girls get a win early in the season,” Coach Scott DeMaris said. “Especially with four of the seven running their first race ever.”

Freshman Mary Joyce took an aggressive start to the race and finished just behind Polesky at seventh place to also help lead the Sleepy Eye girls team to victory.

On the boys side, junior Stephen Joyce led the way with a fifth place finish and a 5K run time of 19:49. Being his first race ever, sophomore Ben Jakobitz surprised the team after he took a respectable seventh place finish. The team took third place overall with a score of 60.

Both the boys and girls teams, which feature runners from Sleepy Eye Public, St. Mary’s, and New Ulm Cathedral, will travel to Tracy on Sept. 5 for their second meet of the season.
