I am very thankful to the Sleepy Eye Herald-Dispatch for the opportunity to share updates with the readers about happenings at Sleepy Eye Public School.
We are in the second week of our 2013-14 school year. Our wonderful custodians worked endless hours during the summer months and got our building in tip-top shape just in time for students to return. We continue to do upgrades to our facilities so that we do not have to spend large amount of dollars in the future. We worked on our sidewalks this year using deferred maintenance revenues. Our facility committee also authorized an upgrade to our high school gym. We are very proud of how beautiful our gym floor looks. We worked diligently to make upgrades to our school security.
As of the start of the new school year, we are using a new security camera based entry system. Individuals wanting to enter our building after 8:15 a.m. and until 3 p.m., need to identify themselves in front of our security camera prior to receiving access to our building. In light of all the recent school related incidents nationwide, we felt we needed to further tighten our security protocol. We are also pleased to announce that we are offering free breakfast to all students who attend our school. Eating breakfast every day ensures that students are ready for the daily challenges of the demanding curriculum.
We also would like to encourage our senior citizens to attend our activities so we decided to offer a free pass to all local residents age 60 and older. Anyone interested in taking advantage of this offer may contact our Community Education office. The ladies in the office will be happy to assist anyone who meets the guidelines.
Our school also welcomed many new teachers for the upcoming year. We are very fortunate that we were able to fill all of our open positions with competent and enthusiastic educators. We are hopeful they will enjoy their tenure at Sleepy Eye Public School.
I am looking forward to a great 2013-14 school year hoping for continued improvement in academics, as well as extra and co-curricular areas.
As always, thank you for supporting your local community and schools so that we can maintain a progressive and caring Sleepy Eye.
