  • The River Valley Wildcats girls tennis team has gone 2-1 in its first three matches to kick off the season.

It was a marathon of action on Aug. 20 in Sleepy Eye when the Wildcats hosted Worthington. Although Worthington won five matches to two, three of those matches went into deciding third sets, and a couple of them lasted over three hours long. Natalie Stevens and Kacie Goblirsch picked up the wins for River Valley, at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectfully.

“I think even in the loss there was a lot of confidence gained by the way we played in our first match,” said Bradd Goede, who starts his 15th year as Head Coach. “To start out the season with such a close match at every position and be put in some stressful spots will play out well for us down the road.”

On Aug. 22, the Wildcats hosted Marshall and picked up their first win of the season. Despite the heat and humidity, all five of the matches won for River Valley came in commanding straight sets.

The Wildcats continued their momentum the next day with a dominant 7-0 victory over the young team of New Ulm. Both Stevens and Goblirsch picked up their third wins in a row on the season.

River Valley was able to take a break on Aug. 27, as the dual meet against Maple River was canceled due to the heat wave.
