  • It’s always hard to think of a title for my column when I  have a variety of subjects to write about. I can’t properly combine topics that don’t have to do with each other into a title that makes sense, so sometimes generic titles work best.

To start off, I thought I’d share an update on how my disc golf vacation went. I didn’t get any aces, but I threw really well and even won some money playing a round of skins betting a dollar per hole. The trip overall was very successful, and I  encourage anyone who hasn’t taken a vacation in a while to do so and enjoy life while you can!

The final day of the disc golfing trip was the start of the massive heat wave that has been melting the midwest for the past week. The heat index reached to about 100 degrees on Sunday, but that didn’t stop my friends and I from throwing 36 holes in the scorching sun for most of the day. Even after I put on sunscreen, drank tons of Gatorade and took breaks in the shade, I still felt like I was going to pass out. This brings me to a really important subject, drinking water. Everyone should be drinking extra amounts of water during this heat wave, but especially athletes. Athletes can get heat stroke pretty easily under these conditions if they aren’t careful. I can’t imagine running around in football gear in this heat. I get worn out just by walking my dog around the block.

In other news, both Sleepy Eye schools are back in session, which means fall sports are at full throttle. The school year is pretty fun for me because I stay very busy covering as many school sporting events as possible. The first couple of high school football games begin this Friday with both schools on the road. Next week will be the big football game between St. Mary’s and Sleepy Eye Public. Cross country, volleyball and tennis events are already underway too. Be sure to check out the Fall Sports Preview in this week’s paper, where you can find all of the information you need on the fall sports teams this year. I wanted to say thank you to the coaches who gave me all of the great information regarding their teams. It’s going to be a very fun and successful fall sports season and I encourage Sleepy Eye residents to come out and support all of the teams!
