  • The District 84 Board of Education met on Aug. 8 and unanimously approved a resolution regarding a new board-approved referendum authority.
    "Essentially it's an allowance by the state to allow districts that don't have current referendums to have a tax levy in an amount of up to $300 per pupil," Board member Sheila Schmid said. "It really just allows a level playing field."
    The Minnesota Legislature approved the allowance for referendums of this type in May. It will help generate more revenue for the school district but will also increase taxes starting next year.
    Look for an in-depth story in September outlining the details of the referendum authority.
    Other items discussed include a psychologist will be returning to the school district. It was reported he falsified funds from the State and was on unpaid suspension, but will be reinstated into Sleepy Eye's school district with good intentions as a school psychologist.
    Principal Shane Laffen reported summer school went well overall, but there is one seventh grader who will be repeating the seventh grade.
    Superintendent John Cselovszki said Corn Days should be a success and the high school band is looking forward to marching in the parade on Aug. 17. Cselovszki also mentioned complimentary passes to all school athletic events are now offered to seniors age 60 and over. The passes can be obtained at the Sleepy Eye Community Education Office at Sleepy Eye High School.
    The action items approved were:
    • Resignations of Jayme Olsen as Special Education paraprofessional and Lauren Lippert as ECFE Instructor;
    • Hires of Julie Carlson as SMHS Counselor, Tamra Smertneck as FTE FACS instructor, and Craig Murphy as the JH football coach for the 2013-14 school year;
    • Speech teacher joint agreement with GFW for the 2013-14 school year;
    • MSBA membership for 2013-14;
    • Two open enrollment out of the district to New Ulm;
    • Donation of $2,000 from the Sleepy Eye Football Boosters for the SEPS football program.
