Mildred Bertrand, age 98, of Sleepy Eye, died Friday, August 9, 2013 at the Golden Living Center in Franklin. Visitation will be on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and will continue on Saturday from 7:30 until 10 a.m. at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye. Service will be held at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye on Saturday, August 17, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Sleepy Eye. Mildred Marie Bertrand was born August 8, 1915 to George and Isabelle (Radamacher) Schaupp in Winona. She moved from Rice Lake, Wisc. to Sleepy Eye in 1933 with her parents. She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Kiefer until she and Clem married in June of 1940. They farmed 5 miles northwest of Sleepy Eye where they raised eight children. Mildred worked in the Farm Bureau Insurance office from 1964 until she retired in 1980. She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting and traveling with family and friends.
She is survived by her children, Patty (Jerry) Steeber of Maple Grove, Dave (Linda) of Bloomington, Jerry (Emilie) of Sleepy Eye, Carol Wexler of San Pablo, Calif., Jim (Linda) of New Ulm, Kathy (Dave) Suker of Akeley, Mark (Gail) of Akeley, 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clement in 1982; daughter, Joan Marie in 1969; son-in-law, Bruce Wexler in 2012; and great-granddaughter, Amanda Bertrand.
