  • The Sleepy Eye Post 7 Legion baseball team ended their season last weekend after they went 2-2 at the American Legion District Tournament in New Ulm.

Sleepy Eye started off the tournament with a 2-1 win over Mankato American on July 25. John Mangen hit an RBI in the first inning to score Legion’s first run of the game. Sleepy Eye had a chance to bring in more in the sixth inning but ended it by leaving two runners on base.

In the seventh, Mankato tied it 1-1 after a close play at home plate. Mangen was catching for Sleepy Eye and unfortunately bobbled the ball around and would have easily had the runner out at home. But it didn’t matter a half inning later, as Brandon Helget led Sleepy Eye to victory after he hit a huge, crucial triple and proceeded to score off a wild pitch. Helget went 3-for-3 at bat.

Jordan Anderson threw four strikeouts, three walks and five hits on the mound over nine innings. Anderson said it was nice to get revenge on the team that beat them 16-9 just a few days before.

“It felt really good,” Anderson said. “We played the defense which is a huge thing since we didn’t do that last time.”

On July 26, Sleepy Eye took on Worthington. Sleepy Eye got things going in the third, after a couple of hits led to Brady Hansen scoring off of a wild throw to second base. Brandon Helget had a great hit which brought in two more. Sleepy Eye’s 3-0 lead lasted until the seventh inning, in which Worthington woke up at bat and scored two. Sleepy Eye left two runners on base in the top of the eighth, but still got the close 3-2 victory. Mike Hirsch pitched for six innings and allowed four hits and two runs, while Mitch Neid got the save and threw two strikeouts.

On Saturday, Sleepy Eye had a tough 0-10 loss to New Ulm Gold, who went on to win the tournament. The hitting wasn’t on for Sleepy Eye and neither was the pitching. Sleepy Eye went through four different pitchers throughout the game but to no avail. New Ulm Gold dominated in all aspects.

This bumped Sleepy Eye down to the losers bracket, where they faced Worthington for a second time. Worthington came to play, as the team had a small lead up until the fifth inning, when Sean Mathiowetz hit a two RBI double which tied the game 3-3. Worthington brought in a fast throwing pitcher late in the game which thwarted any more opportunities for Sleepy Eye. Worthington was able to win 4-3 after 10 innings. This time Mike Zinniel led on the mound for Sleepy Eye. Zinniel threw three strikeouts but allowed 12 hits over the 10 innings.
