  • New Ulm Medical Center (NUMC) participated Thursday with area police and emergency response services in an “active shooter” simulation exercise to train for responding to a school shooting.

The medical center partnered with Brown County Emergency Management, Allina EMS and South Central EMS for the training. Other agencies also assisting included the New Ulm Police Department and Minnesota Security and Emergency Management.

The simulations revolved around staff and students from New Ulm Public School who participated as victims for this exercise. Unlike last week’s “active shooter” simulation, Thursday’s drill focused on NUMC doctors, nurses and staff to test response capabilities.

Organizers of this exercise called the training a success by helping them understand the limits of their system and learn how to either fix it or adapt to it. Organizers also said it allows first responders and members of the medical community to have an experience to draw knowledge from, rather than troubleshooting during a real situation.
