Sleepy Eye Medical Center (SEMC) offers pre-natal and post-delivery counseling for expectant mothers and new mothers.
Prenatal counseling is offered on the first and third Tuesdays of the month from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The 45 minute session requires an appointment and is conducted in a one-to-one conference with the Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC). The prenatal lactation counseling session is included in the obstetrical package offered by SEMC and is covered by most insurance programs.
Post-delivery lactation counseling is handled as one visit by the CLC while the new mother and baby are in the hospital after delivery. If further counseling is necessary it is handled on a case-by-case basis.
“The prenatal lactation counseling sessions are tailored to each mother, based on needs and experience level,” said Chiloe Kottke, CLC, SEMC. “We cover the benefits of breast feeding, what to expect in the hospital and breast feeding at home with the new baby.”
According to Kottke, both baby and mother benefit from breast feeding.
“For the baby, breast milk is easier to digest and it is rich in nutrients and antibodies that help fight disease. For mothers, life is a bit easier once you settle into a routine, breastfeeding saves money and is good for the mother’s health, reducing the risk for Type 2 Diabetes, breast cancer and postpartum depression,” she said.
