The River Valley Bullhead 50s, who include some athletes from the Sleepy Eye area, kicked off their baseball season last week with two wins.
The Bullheads were in Loretto on July 18, where Keith Bense threw a complete game victory over the TC Mets. The Bullheads were down 5-3 in the seventh inning, but were able to score six runs late in the game to get a 9-5 win.
Tom Bruess and Jeff Knutson led the Bullheads at bat with two hits apiece, while Bruce Jacobs and Dave Johnson each had two RBI.
On July 20, the team took on the Minnesota Saints. The Saints scored four runs in the first inning, after Myron Seidl struggled pitching. But Seidl settled down and pitched five scoreless innings in a row as his teammates got the hitting going. The Bullheads were able to catch up in a hurry, taking advantage of the poor pitching by the Saints. The Saints walked eight batters, and led the Bullheads to the 10-6 victory. Jacobs and Johnson led the offense with a combined five RBI and three of the team’s seven hits.
The next game for the Bullheads will be on their home field in St. Peter on July 30 at 8 p.m. where they will take on the TC Mets once again.
