The Sleepy Eye 18U softball team’s regular season is coming to a close, and the team is looking to compete at state this weekend.
On July 9, Sleepy Eye added two wins on their record after it hosted Tri County Central and Montgomery Lonsdale. Laura Pelzel led Sleepy Eye on the mound against Tri County. Pelzel threw seven strikeouts and only allowed three scattered hits in the game. Meanwhile, Jordyn Domeier went 2-for-3 at bat, with one RBI and one triple. Also, Larissa Helget and Karlie Heiderscheidt had an RBI apiece and Carly Jensen had a double and one run scored. Sleepy Eye won 4-0.
In the second game of the night, Sleepy Eye defeated Montgomery 7-6 in an international overtime rule. It was a back-to-back battle on both sides, but Sleepy Eye prevailed with its strong at bat players. Larissa Helget went 2-for-5, while Maggie Sellner went 1-for-2 with one RBI. Also, Katelyn Christensen had a walk, a hit and scored one run for the team.
“It’s great to see how well they’re playing at this point in their season,” coach Lynnae Pelzel said. “Right before state!”
Sleepy Eye’s last home game of the summer is on July 18 at Burnside Park. The team will compete this weekend in St. Cloud at the State Competition for a chance to move on to play at Nationals. The Sleepy Eye 16U team will be playing in Mankato, while the 14U and 12U teams will be playing in Mounds View and Farmington.
