  • The Sleepy Eye VFW baseball team is the tournament champion after going 3-0 at the Sioux Falls Classic last weekend.

The team traveled to Sioux Falls on July 12 and took on Manhattan, KS where Sleepy Eye dominated in a 8-0 shutout. On Saturday, Sleepy Eye had a close game against the home town team of Sioux Falls West, where Sleepy Eye pulled off a 1-0 win. Soon after, the team took on Mitchell, SD. The players showed they were not tired from the previous game, as they pounded Mitchell 9-1.

The championship games on Sunday were canceled due to rain, and Sleepy Eye was declared the tournament champion because of their No. 1 overall seed.

Meanwhile, the team took on Fairmont in a doubleheader on July 11. The first game was a pitching battle on both sides as only three total runs were scored. Sleepy Eye held on to a one run lead all the way until the sixth inning when Fairmont had multiple base hits which allowed them to tie the game 1-1. Opportunities came for Sleepy Eye in the bottom of the seventh but they were halted after Fairmont made an easy double play.

After Sleepy Eye held off Fairmont for a half inning, the team got early opportunities with Jay Helget getting on base from a walk. This was followed by a hit by Matt Berkner and then a perfect sacrifice bunt by Jared Rothmeier. It was Lucas Heiderscheidt’s turn to shine, and he was able to get a base hit which brought home Helget. Sleepy Eye won the game 2-1.

The second game was quite the opposite of the first, as Sleepy Eye won 10-2 in dominant hitting fashion.

Sleepy Eye moves its record to 14-5 overall, and will host the Sub-District Tournament this weekend. Sleepy Eye will take on Mankato Maroon on July 18 for its first Sub-District game which will be at 7 p.m. The games on July 19 will take place at 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 7 p.m. and Sleepy Eye will play depending on their result from July 18. The games on July 20 will be at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 4 p.m., and the Championship Game will be on July 21 at noon.
