  • Brown County Emergency Management in partnership with the City of New Ulm and the Brown Lyon Redwood Renville (BLRR) Emergency Response Unit (ERU) hosted a county wide active shooter full scale exercise on July 11.

Brown County Public Health and the New Ulm Medical Center staff participated in an active shooter exercise with law enforcement agencies and actors. This exercise helped the staff to gain insight of events that may occur, and how their individual professions could be affected, during a mass shooting incident.

The Brown County Exercise Planning Team has been working together to implement two full scale training exercises in New Ulm. Multiple jurisdictions participated including: New Ulm Police Department, Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Sleepy Eye PD and Springfield PD.

From a planning standpoint, it is extremely important to practice the scenarios as they may occur within the community. This trial situation can help law enforcement and school staff identify possible challenges and problems within their emergency plans. It also highlights areas that may need improvement or further planning.

When faced with an emergency situation, it is beneficial for first responders and law enforcement to have an experience to draw knowledge from, rather than trouble shooting during a real situation. The active shooter exercise has identified key training areas, initiated a conversation about safety and given all involved a new perspective on how to handle a tragedy.
