  • Babysitting Clinic starts July 22
    • email print
  • A number of activities remain for the youth of our community. Many are involved in sporting activities, as well as visiting the aquatic center on a daily basis. Park and Rec activities are only in the fourth week so there is still plenty to do.

The annual Babysitting Clinic is just around the corner. It is scheduled for the week of July 22, 8-10 a.m. each day. The clinic is open to youth 10 years of age and older. Topics include child growth and development, cleanliness, handling the small baby, emergency and safety measures, playing with children, bedtime routines and discipline. There is space available for others to participate. Class will be held in Room 134 at Sleepy Eye High School.

A new activity is Lego Design I for students entering grade 1-3. Science and math concepts will be learned while working with levers, pulleys and gears in order to build projects such as carousels, drawbridges and conveyor belts. Lego Design II is for students entering grades 4-7. This group will gain understanding of how wheels, axles, levers and gears work together to make vehicles move. They will have the opportunity to hook up a motor and a battery to their vehicles and race! Both groups will be meeting Monday, July 29 through Wednesday, July 31, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon all three days.

The summer Quilt in a Day session will be held on Saturday, July 27, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is for all skill levels and one can start a new project or work on one that is in that tote. We will be meeting at the Sleepy Eye School cafeteria.

The response for Sleepy Eye Community Theatre summer production of “Eclipsed” was well received. The Eagles Orchid Inn provided a wonderful meal and the cast was well prepared for this murder mystery which involved the audience.

Responses for Preschool registration continue to arrive daily, so it is not too late to return them or seek more information. School Readiness is for children who are four by Sept. 1 and Discovery Time is for those who will be three by Sept. 1. School Readiness offers classes three days a week and Discovery Time two days a week. Both morning and afternoon sessions are available.

Since staff is part-time, they may not always be in the building. You can call and leave a message on voice mail, 507-794-7873, and we will get back to you with more information. Another option is to e-mail staff with questions and to sign-up. Addresses are on the school website.
